Prin \"atragerea\" pe rasina cationica opreste sarurile de calciu si magneziu, in timp ce elimina in apa saruri de sodiu. In acest fel se face schimbul ionic. La un moment dat rasina cationica (mediul filtrant) este epuizata (incarcata cu saruri de calciu si magneziu), moment in care pentru a mai putea deduriza apa, este necesara o regenerare. Aceasta regenerare se face cu sodiu (sare pastile). Sarea pastile se dizolva intr-o anumita cantitate de apa calculata automat de catre dedurizator. The volumetric water softener meters every litre of water consumed and in this way commands regeneration only when it is needed.
